# PM sends email without having to tag

Continuing the discussion from [Should always receive email notification of PMs](https://meta.discourse.org/t/should-always-receive-email-notification-of-pms/51291/3):
Is this correct–
An email of a PM will only be sent if a user is tagged in the body of the message?
If so, is there a way to change it? I have many users who never go to the site and use Discourse from email only.
Thanks for any thoughts.

No this is not correct.
Notification rules are global and apply to all arriving notifications of any kind.
If you are **currently actively pinging the website in your web browser** , you won’t get an email for a notification that arrives within a 10 minute window of the last time your web browser pinged the website.
To “guarantee” an email notification, either
- close your web browser (or close the tab open to the website)
- enable “mail me even if active on the website” in your user preferences
