It seems normal and desirable that they be able to do so if they are simultaneously part of other groups, or if it concerns their public activities; otherwise, it is PM.
However, for relevance reasons, filtering posts from a group by category could be considered via a plugin.
Actually, I donât think itâs normal for a member of a group to be able to view the activities of another member of the same group when those activities are outside that group.
Itâs almost unpleasantâŠ
What does âoutside of a groupâ mean?
The concept of âoutside ofâ or âinsideâ makes (much) more sense for categories.
It would make sense for groups if one (or more) category to display were defined for each group. This is not (yet) the case (though it is planned in the code, see above). One might assume that if a category and a group share the same name, a relationship automatically exists between the two, or that if a single, unique group has the right to post in a single, unique category, then a message in that category is treated as a message in that group. But that is not necessarily the case; the bijection is rare.
Let us recall the existence of private group messages, which also function similarly to what is desired:

The idea in this scenario is to do without a category.
Hello @Jean_Yves_Dhenain,
Letâs use the informal âtuâ form with each other if that works for everyone (I had used the formal âvousâ with Camille yesterday, following Zogstipâs lead). Ah, the French language ![]()
Are you the âdirectorâ of Camille that she mentioned yesterday, or is there no connection? You seem to be on the same page as her. Itâs hard for me to understand, Iâll admit (Iâm more aligned with Benjamin).
Like him, and as I had tried to clarify with Camille yesterday, this notion of activity âoutside the groupâ is incomprehensible to me and doesnât seem to correspond to anything concrete (especially not technically at the forum level).
There is public and private activity. What is public is public to everyone, including members of a private group. So what they say publicly is visible to everyone, including other members of a private group they belong to. I donât really see how one could think or want it otherwise. Or else, they should not say it publicly (via private message, or in a private category that might perhaps be part of another group, for example).
Imagine in real life a secret society whose members exchange information among themselves. If a member goes on TV and says something, everyone will potentially see it, including members of the secret society. How could it be otherwise? Now, if he is part of another secret society, only the members of that latter group will know what he says there (during the secret meetings of that group, of course). What exactly are you trying to achieve on your end? (possibly explaining it with an analogy from âreal lifeâ). A âprivate groupâ is not an invention of invisibility for its members, no matter what they do or where they do it.
EDIT: Okay, I think it just clicked
Your âgroup activityâ would only be what happens in a category dedicated to the group (potentially private). That is the technical part of what you and Camille apparently want to do. And then, you would simply want the groupâs âactivityâ tab to display ONLY what happens in that category. Benjamin provided the solution to accomplish this above.
This does not mean that other members wonât see everything that is done publicly, or that they wonât be able to read it, but just that it wonât appear in the groupâs âactivityâ tab (it will still appear in each memberâs individual tab). Is that correct? (that is actually what Camille had explained. It is only a matter of presentation. Which I strangely had a hard time understanding)
Ouch, Iâve re-read the entire discussion, and itâs not simple. It often goes off in the wrong direction just because of a mention that can be confusing or something that isnât clear (for example, the difference between something not displayed in a list versus something completely inaccessible/invisible, etc.).
Is what you ultimately want simply this?
Hello @Mevo,
I apologize for taking up so much of your time and for the number of responses required, and I would like to start by saying a big thank you.
Yes, Camille works with me.
Our initial need was to ensure that a member cannot see the activities of another member of the same group that were carried out outside of that group.
At the very least, if we cannot remove this visibility, then so be it.
However, we have another, more fundamental issue: navigation.
Would it be possible to speak with you on Skype for 5 minutes? This could avoid many time-consuming exchanges. Is that possible for you?
We would like to:
- Force the landing page for members to be the categories list⊠because we intend to use this solution to publish updates about our software⊠this risks unnecessarily cluttering the âRecentâ section, to the detriment of discussions between members.
And a couple of other similar things. Like here: https://discuss.elastic.co/ â users first land on the categories.
This is the âtop menuâ parameter
https://your.domain/admin/site_settings/category/all_results?filter=top%20menu
from which the order of appearance of the tabs is determined, and thus the first one displayed by default
Choose the items that appear in the homepage navigation, as well as their order. Example: latest|new|unread|categories|top|read|posted|bookmarks
and on the other hand, the âdesktop category page styleâ parameter allows you to choose how this category page is displayed.
Thatâs fine. As long as things are moving forward, or at least it feels that way, itâs not a big deal. In theory, itâs possible to talk on the phone, but Iâm not convinced that would go better or faster (in fact, it would likely be the opposite).
Regarding navigation, @Benjamin_D has already provided the solution.
As for the first point, as mentioned above, what do you mean by âseeâ? Do you mean it shouldnât be accessible or visible at all, or just that it shouldnât appear in the groupâs âactivityâ tab? (It would still be visible and accessible elsewhere).
If we use the analogy of public activity being broadcast on TV, do you just want it not to appear in the TV schedule? Or do you want it not to be broadcast at all, or for access to the channel to be impossible?
What is public is visible. Either it shouldnât be visible (making it private, which also limits the number of potential participants and thus the possible discussion), or it should be made inaccessible (no public part at all. In that case, itâs clear there wonât be any discussion âoutside the groupâ if thatâs the only thing they have access to). There is still the question of private messages to consider. In the worst case, you can also create separate forums for each group of people, who would then be completely isolated, with potentially different settings/configurations. That is one solution/option.
Thank you a thousand times, but I am impressed by the amount of content in a single response, and I feel awkward because our needs are very specific, such as:
How to change the font color / title and subject colors?
Configuring email notifications
etc.
It is really to get straight to the point and save you the time of writing all this.
That would be great.
