# Receiving multiple notifications about the same reply

It still feels like a bug that when mcwumbly adds a tag to his [topic](https://meta.discourse.org/t/finding-subcategories-via-the-category-dropdown-in-the-topic-list/397016), I receive a new notification that my post was linked. The link was already there when he posted the topic, and I was notified of the quote. Nothing has changed apart from the tag. So why is it expected that an edit triggers a second notification?

In addition to the steps in the first post, it also happens with these steps:

1. notifiedUser creates a topic
2. spammer replies as a linked topic. The post contains a link by default, so you only need to add the @mention and the quote.  
 → notifiedUser is notified about the @mention (expected) and reads the topic
3. spammer adds a tag to the topic  
 → notifiedUser is notified about being quoted in the post (unexpected, they were already notified and nothing has changed)
4. spammer edits the title of the topic  
 → notifiedUser is notified about being linked in the post (unexpected, they have been notified before, and the post still didn’t change)
