As a dark-mode user, I always struggle with websites that use pure black for background and pure white for text. The current Discourse forum UI has a good background, but still using pure white (or close enough) for the text in the topics title and posts/replies, which makes it a bit hard on the eyes, for me at least.
I would recommend using the same color as the one in the sidebar: var(--d-sidebar-link-color). Or at least allow us to pick which one, assuming some users would still like the pure white version. Here’s a before an after:
I use color correction (marketed as night shift), extra dim, and ember filter (light night) primarily because of this.
Over time, I’ve come to understand that light themes are better suited for well-lit environments. Going fully dark mode is counterintuitive, based on research papers and my own experience.
Is that our default dark palette? I thought we were slightly darker than full white (looks like #ddd on my test site) but maybe I’m not up to date — generally agree though, pure white is too much contrast
Even on the Foundation theme, I still feel like the white is a bit harsh, and I use the brightness on my laptop set to the middle, so it’s not even that bright to begin with
I left it as default. I didn’t pick anything else other than the theme.
But I like the Meta Branded theme, it’s just that the white is too bright for me.
I was talking about Foundation theme and the color palette “dark” - not dark mode. The color palette heading is a little confusing when the palette dropdowns are missing.
