Safe re-install of Discourse

backup
docker

(Kovah) #1

Hi there,
I have problems with my Discourse install and wanted to make a fresh start again: completely remove Discourse and Docker from my system, install both again and then import the backups.
If I download a backup from the admin panel and restore it, will the whole app be like it was before or do I have to backup other important files / download anything?
Thanks for the help!

Are you going to be reinstalling on the same virtual machine / droplet / server or on a different one?

Yes - though there are currently a few bugs that make it so you will have to ./launcher restart app before using it.

It should be the same machine.

So after the reinstall: import the backup and run the command you wrote and it should run?

Okay, so the /var/discourse/shared/standalone/postgres* folders contain your database. If you can get a rebuild running without touching that, there will be no need for a restore.

If, on the other hand, you screwed up the database, the first thing you should try is to nuke that folder.
