Search icon disappeared after upgrade to 3.4.1

AI-generated summary

The user choice_ss is experiencing an issue with the search icon disappearing on the home page after upgrading to Discourse version 3.4.1. The icon only appears when scrolling down on topics, but disappears when reaching the top. ondrej suggested checking for custom themes or plugins, but choice_ss confirmed that everything is default apart from some CSS settings, and the issue persists in safe mode. choice_ss also mentioned that the issue only occurs in desktop mode, not on mobile devices.

bob_the_tomato shared a link to a similar issue that occurred a couple of months ago, and Arkshine investigated the issue, discovering that the showSearchButton feature was introduced recently and is not part of the stable version yet. Arkshine found that manually setting a value for the search_experience site setting makes the icon appear.

It was revealed that the system admin had previously upgraded to the latest beta version 3.5.0-beta2-dev and then switched to the stable repository, which may have caused a downgrade to version 3.4.1 without a manual deployment. choice_ss is now seeking a solution to either fix the current issue or handle it by setting up/rebuilding to a specific version.

Hi,

The search icon on the home page has disappeared after upgrading to 3.4.1

It pops up in topics but only when the page gets scrolled. As soon as the scroll reaches the top it disappears again. Only the “magnifying glass” icon

Wandering if anyone experienced this issue before and if there is a fix without having to rebuild the image.

Thanks

this is how it would normally look

That’s not the latest. Did you mean 3.5.0 beta 1?

Do you have any custom themes / theme components / plugins etc that could be interfering with your site? If so, try safe mode.

Thanks ondrej,
We have had unfortunate experiences going to the beta releases, so are currently on 3.4.1 until the next stable release. Are we better off upgrading from 3.4.1 to a later beta release?
No custom themes or plugins, everything seems to be default apart from some CSS settings.
Thanks for reminding about safe-mode, unfortunately the same issue in the safe mode.

Also forgot to mention, that the issue cannot be replicated on mobile devices, only happens in desktop mode.

Some icons not showing up after upgrade - #11 by Aaron_B
This happened to someone a couple of months ago. [1] Maybe try the solution?

  1. on 3.4.0.beta2-dev, and yes I’m aware it is a different version ↩︎

I took a look at his forum and it isn’t very clear.

His current Discourse version is supposed to be:

Discourse v3.4.1 — https://github.com/discourse/discourse/commits/25a8e64a53

Using Ember Inspector, I can see

However, showSearchButton has been introduced recently alongside a new search_experience site settings. It’s not part of the stable version yet, unless I’m wrong (?).

The setting returns nothing:

But once we do set manually a value, the icon appears:

Did you downgrade at some point from the latest to the stable version? It’s confusing, not sure what’s happening.

Hi Arkshine,
That’s actually quite possible. I just spoke to the system admin who has performed an upgrade which went to the latest beta version 3.5.0-beta2-dev, and since we didn’t want any more beta versions moving forward, we changed to look at stable repository for future stable releases.
We however do not recall deploying 3.4.1 manually which must have happened on its own and resulted in downgrade to this version.
Is there any way to either fix the current issue with the search icon as this seems to be the only reported problem or are we better off to handle it differently to be on the safe side and do a setup/rebuild to a specific version?
