Split into two settings: "Who can message and @mention this group?"

We use groups actively in our community but are only gradually rolling out group messages, especially while some key messaging features are not yet in place. We also don’t intend to use all of them for messaging anyway, but rather use them for permissioning and mentioning in discussion topics.

So it would be a big help to be able to have separate settings for mentioning and messaging so they can be different.

Is this #pr-welcome material?

I would like to make groups mentionable, but not message-able as we’d like to really encourage all activity on Discourse to take place in topics.

I’m a little weary of just trying things out as currently implemented because it may be harder to “take away” the feature from groups later if we open it up, because… loss aversion and what not.

@tobiaseigen what are your thoughts about this feature ~ 1year later?

It has not been an issue on our site since then but I still think it’s a good idea to limit who can message groups.

Me too. This will be a very welcome improvement, as group messaging is still not ready for prime time and people still keep trying to use it.

This has been merged. We now have two separate settings:

Thanks again @nbianca!
