Trial Ending - installing from back-up

(Scott Salter) #1

Hi,

We are currently trialling Discourse and will be looking to fully move our forum to Discourse very soon.

With our trial ending, is it possible to export that and then import it to our new Discourse instance?

I’ve got the forum looking exactly how we want it, so it would be ideal if we could do so.

If I create a backup in admin > backups, and then upload this file to the same page once we are up and running, will this solve that?

Thanks

(ljpp) #2

Short answer: Yes

The backup - restore functionality is one of the strengths in Discourse. Copy your app.yml to the new server, restore and you are rolling in no time.

(Kane York) #3

As the trial is hosted at discourse.org, they don’t have an app.yml to copy - @Scott_Salter is going to need to make a brand new one and add any non-default plugins they want to keep.

The uploads, customizations, posts, settings, etc are all included in the backup though.

Yep. You’ll need to tick “allow restore” in the site settings for your brand-new, blank Discourse site (which will be overwritten when you perform the restore, so it’ll be back to allow restore = false).

Thanks @riking - appreciate your reply. Good to hear, I thought that would be the case but wanted to double check just in case!

I’ve set-up my new Discourse and am trying to restore from back-up as discussed above.

I’ve got the .tar.gz file and it uploads fine. When I try to restore to that file, I get the following failure notice: Any ideas?

It looks like you’re trying to restore a newer version of Discourse into an older one (April 8). Upgrade the site you’re trying to restore into and try again.

(Jeff Atwood) #7

Hmm, can we provide better error message feedback here @tgxworld? I think this should be blocked / notified about in a rational way.

(Alan Tan) #8

Hmm what does tar --list --file <filename> metadata.json give you?

(Scott Salter) #9

When I run the upgrade (using the below)

I get a message saying already up to date. My site is completely offline now though.

I am a complete newbie with all this, so any help would be appreciated.

I have installed through Digital Ocean one-click apps if that makes any difference.

(Alan Tan) #11

Done

Added another guard

(Scott Salter) #12

Hey @tgxworld, sorry me again!

Thought it would be needless to start a new thread, so wondered if you could help.

My admin shield does not appear, yet other admins/mods does. See screenshot:

Any ideas?

(cpradio) #13

Do you have Moderator set to True on your account? I think that is the only aspect that kicks off the shield (even though admins do not have to be moderators).

(Scott Salter) #14

It was set to false, so is now fixed thank you.

When you hover over the badge, it says ‘this user is a moderator’ even though I’m an admin, which doesn’t seem right.

(Joshua Rosenfeld) #15

To the end user, Admins are meant to be slightly less visible then Moderators.
