Username change implications

Haven’t quite found the answer anywhere, so forgive this question which I am sure must have been asked before. If I (being the admin) change someone’s username (which I can and for which real life scenarios exist that might ask for this), what are the implications? I am asking specifically about @ mentions and quotes within the forum as well as links. Do I break a lot of legacy content with a username change or is it being kept internally and it’s all forwarded? How is Discourse handling this? Thanks in advance!

Old posts with mentions and quotes will have the wrong name embedded, that is about it.

So they show the wrong name, but will they remain linked correctly?

Be aware that as @eriko noted, changing username will effectively wipe the post / topic history on your user page, though:
