# Using Discourse as a social media platform

There’s an argument to be made that forums are already social media, but that’s very much a “[is a hot dog a sandwich](https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2020/4/9/21214870/hot-dog-sandwich-debate-quiz-alignment-website)” situation…

what does this achieve? is it about familiarity with mainstream social media? does it make things easier to use?
