# What happens to users on the system when upgrading Discourse?

This might be a noob question but is there a way for me to see if there are currently active users on the system? The reason I ask is because I would like to upgrade my Discourse install but I do not want to cause interruptions for people who might be writing posts or or reacting to topics.

If you’re using the `/admin/upgrade` update UI, there will be no noticeable outage or interruption for your users.

Discourse is designed to hot reload itself, so no your users shouldn’t notice any interruption when updating via the web site even if it takes 10 minutes 🙂
