What makes a great forum?

Im doing research and i was wondering, what are they key elements that distinguish a good forum from a great forum software, any suggestions?

What?! This is like asking “what’s the difference between a great football team and artificial stadium grass”.

I’m asking how does one forum can be better than others, because other forums nowadays have similar features, they all look the same, the database type do not matter that much. So what is the icing on the cake, a deal breaker when considering what forum would be better?

Forums are like families. They can be great or terrible depending on who’s in them and how well they get along.

Great forum software facilitates discussion and provides a healthy environment for a forum. Discourse is a good example.
