What sort of replies trigger a notice?

The descriptions for the Tracking and Regular levels of topic tracking each have something to say about “replies to your post(s)”. For this purpose, what constitutes a reply? There are several ways that someone might directly or indirectly reply to a post.

Topic Starter

  • Posts directly referencing the topic’s first post would definitely qualify as a reply.
  • Any other post added to the topic may be considered a reply to the topic itself.

Topic Participant

  • Posts directly referencing the participant’s post(s) would definitely qualify as a reply.
  • Posts immediately after the participant’s post(s), which were started using the Reply button on that participant’s post, will not be visibly labeled as replies even though they clearly are intended to be. Do these also qualify?
  • Posts immediately after the participant’s post(s), which were started using the Reply button at the bottom of the topic page, may be intended to reply to the participant’s post but we cannot be sure. Do these qualify?

Replies using…

  • the reply button at the bottom of the topic
  • the reply button on the first post

… are considered replies to the topic rather than any particular user. The first post rule is a somewhat recent change, see this topic for the rationale.

Yes, this is only a UI option, by default we suppress the “in reply to” indicator if the posts are directly adjacent to each other, because the physical proximity is already such a strong signal that the posts are connected.

It’s also kind of a dumb button to give users to press when you expand “in reply to…” and see that the expansion is… the post directly above the one on your screen right now.

If the post was created using the reply button at the bottom of the topic, it is a reply to the general theme of the topic, not any individual person in the topic.

One thing you did not cover is that quoting a post is universally considered a reply regardless of what button you pressed to initiate the editor. And of course @username mentions are considered replies as well, which you will be notified about.

Anyway, TL;DR

To notify someone of a reply, do one or more of these things:

  • quote their post
  • mention their @username
  • make sure you clicked/tapped the reply button on their post
