Where to put site description?

#1

For a while now my site is listed on google but below my site title it just show random topic title instead of explaining what’s this site is about. It there a way to put description?

(Michael Downey) #2

I don’t think there’s any way to do that yet. It would be a great feature to allow admins to customize it.

#3

It appears that Google is bypassing the description header and instead grabs page content in the body (provided it is structured).

I can think of a work around for this, but you won’t like it besides what would be the point of adding what the site is about? Sounds redundant don’t you want Google to do what it does best and get to the met and potatoes of your site/forum?

Google themselves have the answer: Create good titles and snippets in Search Results - Search Console Help

#5

Well it is better to go straight to the source on this…And I see they don’t like ‘redundant’ so I was right. Thanks for that link!

Paraphrased for TL;DR: Can’t do unique description for each page? Prioritize page content.

(Michael Downey) #6

Topic URLs are appropriate to be described by the topic content. The site home page should have a definable meta description that describes the purpose of the site. Just the list of topic titles as shown on /latest does not do a good job at describing what the site is or what it does.

View source on the homepage here

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en" class="desktop-view not-mobile-device ">
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Discourse Meta</title>
    <meta name="description" content="Discussion about the next-generation open source Discourse forum software">

You can enter description in the admin site settings, it is literally the second field you will see, called site description.

We even nag you when you don’t have this filled out.

Correct. For each of the first listings for each of the sites below his site is not populating description.

Here is his site:

https://www.google.com/#q=site:lfcinsider.com

My site:

https://www.google.com/#q=site:hijnks.com

Meta.d

https://www.google.com/#q=site:meta.discourse.org

So like you said Jeff… He needs to add a site description in his admin section.

I think we can close this one.

#9

Hmm I have filled the site description since beginning but still it show latest…etc

#10

Here is your site description pulled from your site directly:

A place for Liverpool FC fans to talk about all things Liverpool

It looks good. Maybe Google just need to synchronize with your site. Give it some time and see if it corrects itself.

Did you update it recently?

#11

after you mention I take a look at it and update
but the old desc didnt show either

maybe like you said we’ll have to wait and see for google to sync it

(James Cook) #12

Did this ever resolve itself?

Google has just picked up my site and like you I just have random topic text underneath my site title. I have the site description filled out in the admin too.

In terms of what Discourse can do, I believe so.

Google does what Google does

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/79812?hl=en

<meta name="description"
 content="A description of the page" />

This tag provides a short description of the page. In some situations this description is used as a part of the snippet shown in the search results. More information

* note the “some situations”

The More information links to the answer downey posted.

I’m having the same issue. My site has been up for about 4 months. I’ve viewed this thread a few times and assumed that the issue would resolve. I just updated my site description to be more descriptive as per Google’s instructions. I’ll wait a few days to see how this shakes out. @jamesmarkcook is your site description displaying properly in google now?

Here is my site: http://politiforum.com

I’ve stood up other discourse forums for testing and have never had this issue.
