The missing username field might be related to Easier account signup using email codes . Is that change enabled on your forum?

yes it is - well actually no it is the preview setting "Enable local logins via code", is that the same

You can disable it for now - but you should add your feedback to the topic. Once the upcoming change becomes permanent you’ll no longer be able to opt-out.
