A bug in the HTML-to-Markdown pipeline is causing an extra space to be injected when quoting italicized text followed by punctuation. riking demonstrated this issue with italicized text, while adamengst reported experiencing the same problem with bold text. This bug is particularly frustrating when copying and pasting formatted text from other sources, such as WordPress. codinghorror acknowledged the long-standing issue and expressed a desire for it to be fixed, albeit with low priority.
when I mention a book like The Great Gatsby or a movie like Breaker Morant , and when someone later quotes that passage,

This appears to be in the HTML-to-Markdown pipeline, given that it shows up in a cross-site copy paste.
I was just about to post about this as well before finding this old thread. I hit the bug with bold text a lot, though not with quoting. When I selected formatted text that includes bold (probably italic too), I get a space between the bold text and the punctuation.
I run into this all the time because I often move text like this from WordPress to Discourse. (I’d prefer to move from Google Docs to Discourse, but for some reason, Discourse doesn’t recognize bold and italic when pasted from Google Docs.)
