Hey there,
I was just looking at my site and found that I cannot add GIF’s to the user card. I have tried multiple steps but nothing works right now. When a gif is uploaded, it displays as a still image. How can this be solved?
Thanks,
Adrian
Animated GIFs in User Cards
The discussion revolves around the issue of adding animated GIFs to user cards. Adrian_KI initially reported that uploading GIFs results in still images. sam suggested that this feature is no longer supported by default, citing a meta Discourse post.
However, Moin pointed out that user cards might not be affected, and CodingHorror’s user card still works. sam clarified that the issue is due to the removal of Gifsicle from the base image and source, which prevents optimizing animated GIFs.
Falco suggested using animated WebP files as an alternative. Adrian_KI tried using a WebP file and reported success. Falco also recommended updating to the latest Discourse version to support WebP files. However, Adrian_KI mentioned that updating might take months due to their host platform’s support for a stable Discourse version.

I do not think this is supported anymore
I thought the same thing although in other forums it does work.
I thought user cards are not effected
@codinghorror s user card still works.
The Problem seem to occur with new gifs

I have looked through everything related to my question and even tried a lot of things but it just doesn’t work at all.
We stripped Gifsicle: Command-Line Animated GIFs from our base image and source
This means we can no longer optimise animated gifs, I am guessing @codinghorror still works cause it was uploaded and optimised when gifsicle still existed
So this means that forums that had gifs enabled will still have it but not new ones?
Yes, from Sam’s explanation, that does seem to be the case.
As said in that same topic you can use animated webp files just fine.

I also tried GIF animation in a new forum. It worked there perfectly. I believe there might be a problem with my site
Refresh the page here and check my user card. It’s Katara powered now!
webp is recent-ish in Discourse, you will want to update to latest.
Its awesome that someone knows abt my fav series. Thanks, I will surely try!
will take months as our host platform supports a stable discourse version for now
