Suggestion: emoji picker search improvement

AI-generated summary

A discussion is underway about improving the emoji picker search in Discourse. mentalstring suggested adding official emoji names as aliases to improve search results. For example, the :tada: emoji, also known as “party popper”, should be searchable by its full name. sam thinks this might already be possible using existing alias mechanisms, and Falco points out that this is a duplicate of a previous discussion (https://meta.discourse.org/t/add-english-and-translated-aliases-for-emojis/86641), and that the necessary data is maintained by the Unicode Consortium.

Today I was trying to find the :tada: emoji (officially called party popper, but shorted to :tada:) and muscle memory (with MacOS) has me trained to expect finding it by searching for party:

However, Discourse’s emoji picker doesn’t find it for the same search term, even if it is part of the emoji name.

Perhaps the emojis official names could be an alias to each emoji (when they differ from the short version) to improve search on the emoji picker?

I think we already have a built in mechanism for “aliases” @j.jaffeux I recall we discussed this problem previously.

I love the idea of upping the party level in our emoji selector.

The data we need is maintained by the unicode consortium, here is the party popper:
