A user downey reported an issue with email-created replies in Discourse. When replying to a post notification using Gmail, if the initial response is too short, a rejection error occurs. Replying to the initial attempt with a longer response exposes the userโs email address. codinghorror questioned the workflow, suggesting it would be more intuitive to reply directly to the original email. downey explained that the Gmail UI suggests this workflow, and the issue may also occur when replying twice in a row to a topic by email. techAPJ linked a possible solution via a meta discussion on better email reply parsing.
I question whether this is the right way to approach this. Why didnโt you reply to the original email with longer text? Replying to your own email is a bit odd.
But that said, the Gmail UI makes this the suggested workflow, because the big โClick here to Reply or Forwardโ box is below the most recent message in the thread, which is your own, in this scenario. The reply still goes to the other participant in the conversation, which of course is discourse+key@example.com, but itโs replying โtoโ your previous message (if you expand the hidden/collapsed portion of the message).
