How to Change Permissions in Discourse

AI-generated summary

baronesh is seeking guidance on modifying permissions for administrators, moderators, and specific groups in Discourse. ondrej explained that staff permissions (admin/moderator) are set and cannot be changed, but provided resources for understanding trust level permissions (https://meta.discourse.org/t/trust-level-permissions-table-inc-moderator-roles/224824) and category moderators (https://meta.discourse.org/t/category-group-review-moderation/116478). Additionally, ondrej mentioned that many settings now use groups for permissions, and shared resources on this change (https://meta.discourse.org/t/changes-coming-to-settings-for-giving-access-to-features-from-trust-levels-to-groups/283408) and a plugin for category moderators (https://meta.discourse.org/t/category-moderators-enhancer/268065).

I’m looking to adjust admins, moderators and various established groups permissions in Discourse. Specifically, I need guidance on how administrators can modify the permissions for admins, moderators and specific groups. Could you please provide instructions or point me to resources that explain how to adjust these permissions effectively?

Thank you in advance!

Hello baronesh,

In Discourse, what you are given is what you get in terms of staff (admin/moderator) permissions. They are set - you cannot change them.

There are now category moderators available in Discourse. What they can do is trust level dependant but again, they are given a set of tools as standard. You can allow them to have more via this plugin

Furthermore, instead of using trust levels, many settings now use groups for permissions.

Thanks a lot!
