The app install banner isn’t displaying for my site. I somewhat worked around this by documenting the process that people need to go through: [image] Install County Fence as an App Knowledge The Fence - How To county-fence Did you know you can put The County Fence on your home screen and it will function as an app? Here are the steps to do that in Brave on Android. Your steps might be slightly different on iOS or a different browser. You might even get lucky and... To clarify, I’m hoping to prompt them to install it as a PWA. It seems the admin setting for this: [IMG_20250405_101635] Actually gets them to install from the app store, which is not what I want. [image] Android app installation is not offered Support It’s there on the setting: [image] We had a warning for that for site admins, but people complained about having a warning, so person_shrugging Apple declined to implement this on iOS, so there is no event nor native UI for it. In addition it looks like this setting only offers for trust level 1… Which doesn’t appear to be configurable? Anyway, is there a way I can get a similar banner to prompt for PWA install? Or would I need to create a Theme Component for that?

You removed the PWA install banner when you toggled those settings.

The site is at delta.countyfence.org. I unchecked those two boxes just to test. Loaded in firefox on mobile. I’m not seeing a banner so far… You’re saying a PWA banner should display when those boxes are not checked?

I saw the banner once when I first opened Chrome on this URL. I wanted to take a screenshot, but I did not react enough fast. However, I can’t see it anymore, no matter what browser I use, or clear the cache.

[image] bitmage: firefox on mobile Firefox doesn’t support the PWA install banner.

Now in “Browser” a generic Chromium that comes with my phone. Banner doesn’t display here. Chrome won’t install as my phone is degoogled, LineageOS… So I can’t test in that.

AFAIK the PWA install banner is only supported on Google Chrome, and uses the Play Store to build the PWA .APK on the fly during the install process. It depends on several things you won’t have in a degoogled phone.

This Stack Overflow explains more. It looks like PWA should be supported in browsers besides Chrome. I know I installed the PWA from Brave, so my browser certainly supports it. beforeinstallprompt only triggers once - if the user dismisses it it’s gone. Apparently to avoid hassling the user? There doesn’t appear to be any manual way to activate the “install as app” API. Does the Discourse code check specifically for Chrome or does it respond to beforeinstallprompt in any browser? (seems non-browser specific, see code link below) This looks like the original announcement of the feature in Chrome. It seems like the intention was to allow developers to hang onto the event object, and be subtle about the way they are displaying it to the user. If the user ignores it, it should pop up again next time. Only if the user initiates the prompt and then cancels out should it disable the event for a time (e.g. 3 months). The Discourse code responsible for this, however, adds an additional check to see whether the Discourse banner has ever been dismissed. Am I understanding that correctly? It seems like a missed opportunity, we could be presenting the banner again but are choosing not to. What if we left this up to the admin, whether they want to prompt in this circumstance?
