Disable emoji shortcuts in chat

AI-generated summary

Users reported a bug where emoji shortcuts, though disabled in site settings, still convert in chat—despite no separate chat-specific setting Shauny. ondrej confirmed the issue, and Shauny explained that many members prefer ASCII smilies and can manually insert emojis via picker or keyboard. A fix was proposed via PR #33297 by j.jaffeux. However, Shauny noted a community split: some users like the auto-replacement, others dislike it, suggesting it should be a per-user setting. j.jaffeux recommended creating a feature request on meta.discourse.org, which Moin pointed out already exists: Disabling emoji auto-complete as a user, though it’s not chat-specific. Shauny added that they had posted there a year prior with no progress. The issue remains partially resolved: the bug is fixed, but user preference customization is still pending community interest and future development.

I have disabled emoji shortcuts on my site using the settings, and this works in posts, but they still get converted in chat. This seems to be a bug because there is no separate setting for chat.

I can confirm this too.

Is there any reason why you don’t want the autocomplete?

Many of our members prefer to show the ascii version of a smilie rather than the emoji, and if they want an emoji they can use the emoji picker or an emoji keyboard.

That should solve the problem:

We now have a bit of a conflict on the forum because some people liked the emoji replacements, others hate it.

Can this not be a per-user setting? Seems like something that should be per-user.

I encourage you to create a feature request in Feature - Discourse Meta

Depending on the interest of the community we might decide to implement it in the future.

There is a feature request for that: Disabling emoji auto-complete as a user
It is not specifically about chat but general
