Forum Summary Emails showing ads/weird preview text

AI-generated summary

sheapayne is experiencing issues with the daily forum summary emails, including incorrect preview text (like “Your password has been changed”) and unwanted advertisements in the header. The problem isn’t consistent across all users, with different people receiving different messages. sheapayne managed to fix the password change message by editing the HTML.

HAWK requested a link to the community or the full email for troubleshooting and offered direct support via team@discourse.org for hosted customers.

sheapayne believes the issue originates from an <img> tag linking to a third-party image hosting service, rather than a core Discourse problem, which HAWK agrees is more likely. The goal is to enable daily email summaries to increase forum engagement but only after resolving the incorrect content and advertisements.

I’m having some trouble with daily summary emails that are supposed to go out to members of our forum. Thankfully it was set to only send email notifications to staff, but we’ve been getting our daily email summaries of forum activity with preview text like “Your password has been changed” or with a header that asks if we want to upgrade to premium for a 3rd party service that I’m not even sure we’re using. What’s strange is that it’s not the same issue for every user; different people are getting different things in their email every day.

We need to start sending these daily emails out as we have quite a few members in our forum and it would likely increase our engagement, but I need to make sure that the emails are going to have the correct subject lines and not have unintended headers when we send them to customers.

Ad showing in the header for some users:

UPDATE: I found the working “your password has been changed” in the HTML and was able to change it, so that’s the fix for that.

Hi Shea, how strange! Can you provide a link to the community? Or examples of the entire emails?

Alternatively if you are a hosted customer, shoot us an email to team@discourse.org and we’ll help troubleshoot directly.

I actually think the issue is in the < img > tag that links to a 3rd party image hosting service rather than an isue with discourse itself.

That sounds much more likely!
