500 internal server error when updating a post by id

AI-generated summary

A user is experiencing a 500 internal server error when trying to update a post via the Discourse API using Python. The issue occurs during a PUT request to /posts/{id}, with the error originating in posts_controller.rb at line 248, where a TypeError (no implicit conversion of Symbol into Integer) is raised while parsing the raw field. The user notes that read operations work fine and the API key has proper permissions. The error appears to be related to how the raw data is being processed, possibly due to incorrect data formatting in the request. nordize later clarifies that the issue might be related to how the request data is being sent, suggesting a potential problem with the data payload format in the Python request.

I did read and followed Reverse engineer the Discourse API, and discovered that the endpoint is actually /posts/{id} and not /posts/{id}.json, but I did try both.

Discourse running in docker. The following python code gives 500 internal error and I’m a bit stumped. Other read operations work fine (fetching of topics and posts, etc). The api key has global read & write permissions.

Can anyone see what’s wrong? If not, how can I actually debug it?

endpoint = '/posts/6451'  # also tried /posts/6451.json
api_url = self.base_url + endpoint
headers = {'Api-Username': 'system', 'Api-Key': self.api_key}
raw = "... long enough and valid markdown here ..."
data = {
    "post": {
        "raw": raw,
        "edit_reason": "API update",
        "topic_id": self.topic_id, # also tried commenting this out
        "original_text": original_raw, # also tried commenting this out
        "locale": "", # also tried commenting this out
    }
}
response = requests.put(api_url, headers=headers, data=data, timeout=10)
response.raise_for_status()

Line 248 in app/controllers/posts_controller.rb is here (my local discourse file is identical) which is the line parsing the “raw” string. I can’t see what’s wrong …

My apologies. Leaving this here just in case others find the same issue.

Debugging the actual HTTP request sent, I noticed that python was sending the PUT data as "post=raw&post=edit_reason" … replaced data=data with json=data in the requests.put() call and job done.
