The change in FEATURE: add "New category" action to sidebar for admins by ZogStriP · Pull Request #37082 · discourse/discourse · GitHub made me think that adding an option to change the global default to that menu too could help to reduce the confusion between editing the personal sidebar and changing the default for all users.
If there was a 3rd option “edit sidebar default” right below “edit sidebar categories” [1] the difference would maybe be more obvious than with the current edit button and the “configure defaults” link at the bottom. Especially since that link is only visible as long as the default_navigation_menu_categories site setting is empty, so it’s easy to forget that changing it for yourself and for everyone happen at different places. Editing other sections always results in global changes.
I guess there is a wording that highlights this even better, but I think this is enough to explain what I mean ↩︎
