It looks like federation from Mastodon to Discourse breaks, if Mastodon instance is updated to 5.0.0. So, perhaps this is a mastodon bug after all — how… my skills can’t tell.

I was wrong. The version of Mastodon doesn’t matter. If followed actor has a link in that toot, it doesn’t federate to Discourse and I got json= error.

If a reply has a link
- it federates from Discourse to Mastodon
- it doesn’t federate from Mastodon to Discourse and I see mentioned error in the log
So, including a link is always the issue here.
I need to know for sure is this issue of Mastodon or Discourse…
