Access real name in quote display

AI-generated summary

The discussion revolves around displaying a user’s real name instead of their username in quotes, similar to how it is displayed in posts. pfaffman initiated the conversation, seeking a solution that would make quotes more consistent, especially when usernames are meaningless.

The community, including sam and codinghorror, agreed that implementing this feature would be beneficial, especially when the site setting prioritizes full names. However, sam later explained that the change is somewhat involved and would require updates to the autocomplete popup, composer title, and mentions.

The conversation was revisited by codinghorror who asked if the change had been implemented. sam confirmed it had not. JammyDodger later mentioned that the feature seems to be working now.

Continuing the discussion from Display real name instead of username in a quote?:

I need for quotes to display the user real name exactly the same way that they are displayed in posts. In this image, “sam:” should be something like “Sam Saffron (sam):”

I think that this would be more consistent, but it matters only if you have meaningless usernames.

My questions:

  • Can I fix this with a theme or will it take a plugin?
  • Can someone point me to a similar example?

This seems like it should be trivial, but I’m lost on this end of things and don’t know where to start.

@codinghorror I wonder if we should switch quotes to full name when the site setting prioritise full name is enabled?

Sure if it is an easy change that is fine

We would absolutely like to see this feature implemented.

Did we ever actually do this @sam?

Nope, not done, it is a somewhat involved change if we are to involve autocomplete popup and composer title and mentions

I’m pretty sure this works now.
