Discourse Shadowban is a plugin created by notriddle to deal with persistent trolls. It blocks notifications and hides posts from shadowbanned users without their knowledge. The plugin stores a list of shadowbanned usernames in a setting, separated by |s.
notriddle notes that the plugin accomplishes similar results to “disemvowling” without public humiliation. However, some users have reported issues with the plugin, including pdx who found that it does not hide posts on their forum, and LoganRTW who experienced issues with embeds after installing the plugin.
As described by omppatil, shadowbanned users are unaware that their posts are invisible to others, and appear to be participating normally in the forum. It is unclear whether admins/moderators can see and reply to shadowbanned users’ posts privately within the forum.
It blocks the notifications, and it blocks the post from showing up in topic view. And it shouldn’t be possible for the user to tell they’re shadowbanned unless they try.
The list of shadowbanned users is stored in a setting with the usernames separated by |s. There’s probably a better way to do it, but I’m not sure how.
So, basically, a shadowbanned user’s post is invisible to all other users, but not to themselves. From their perspective, they are participating normally in the forum, but nobody ever responds to them. Is that correct? Can admins/moderators see their posts and reply to them privately within the forum, without needing to send a private message?
