Our Discourse is a community for professional gamers and so for us the way we use a “group” is to consider it as a “team” and the members are players in that team. However these teams have logos and we are forced to upload the logos elsewhere and then call them which I think is not ideal.
Since you are allowing groups to have an icon why make it a “url” or an “icon” why not just let us upload directly?
