I wonder if the functionality of defining who can reply and/or view chats, differently, is valuable to someone.
I am currently unsuccessfully trying to create a chat channel called Announcements, where only administrators or staff could send messages.
Currently, by defining the category that I must then link to the chat channel, with the established permissions (everyone can read, staff can post), the chat does not work as intended.

Yeah we’ve discussed no longer associating chat channels with category permissions before, so it’s possible that we may do that in the future.
At the moment, as you discovered, to be able to join a chat channel you must have reply permissions in the attached category. There’s no concept of a read-only chat channel in Discourse yet.

Thanks for your reply, Kris. I’m glad to know you’re considering it.
For now, the workaround I found is to create the category and hide it via CSS. Ideally, we’ll be able to create chats without needing to assign them to categories
