only TL1 and higher have access to chat (as I understanding, channels and DMs)
only a given group I have defined can initiate DMs
For personal messages, I used “Personal message enabled groups” to restrict creation of personal messages to my custom user group. But I would like to make it possible for any user to send a personal message to staff members (or ideally, members of a custom group). Is that possible?
Yes, it is. Sending messages to groups is not affected by that setting. Messaging a group only depends on the “Who can message this group” setting in the group’s configuration.
That said, it can be a little difficult for users to find the message button on the group page, but you can put a link that creates a new message to that group somewhere else to help them.
Ah maybe I had, but that sounds like what I need! Thanks!
Whoops, I think my question was unclear, sorry. I didn’t mean “message the whole group” but “message an individual if they are part of group X”.
But in any case this information is useful, that means I could create a group that people can globally message in certain circumstances. I’m thinking in particular of new users who are stuck or lost. So we could have a group which is “SOS Newbies” or something like that, with a handful of kind-hearted patient helpers, and if somebody who has just joined the platform is too lost, they could start a personal message (ie, the “private topic” kind) with that group? And then, within the group, somebody could assign themselves the topic in question and take the person by the hand?
Is my understanding that we could use this feature in such a way correct?
