Add interface preferences to individually hide Suggested and Related topics

Hi!

I’d like to suggest adding two optional interface preferences that allow users to hide the topic lists shown at the bottom of every topic.

Instead of a single setting, I think it would be more flexible to let users disable them individually:

  • :check_box_with_check: Hide Suggested topics
  • :check_box_with_check: Hide Related topics

These would be client-side preferences under Preferences → Interface, affecting only the current user’s experience.

Why this would be useful

  • Gives users more control over the interface.
  • Reduces visual clutter for those who don’t use these sections.
  • Some users may want to keep Related topics while hiding Suggested topics (or vice versa), so separate preferences provide more flexibility.
  • It only changes the UI for the individual user and doesn’t affect the site’s configuration.

Is this something you would personally use?

If so, which would you hide, and why?

Would you make the same choice in all Discourse sites you’re familiar with? Or would your choice be dependent on the site? If so, what about the site or your usage of it would your choice depend on?

Yes, I would personally use this option. I would probably hide Suggested topics while keeping Related topics enabled.

Suggested topics often feel less relevant to me because they can introduce unrelated discussions, while Related topics are usually more useful when I want to continue reading about the same subject or find similar discussions.

I don’t think I would make the same choice on every Discourse site. It would depend on how the community is structured and how useful the recommendations are. On a large forum with many categories and a lot of activity, I would be more likely to hide Suggested topics. On a smaller or more focused community where recommendations are usually accurate, I might keep both enabled.

Having separate preferences would be better because different users have different browsing habits, and it allows everyone to customize the experience without affecting the site’s default configuration.
