For Discourse itself - as opposed to individual Discourse communities - the main issue I can see from the whitepaper per-se is giving users the ability to specify pronouns.

That might be worth implementing into the core version of Discourse.
It could also make for a great plugin. Feel free to suggest it in the marketplace with a reasonable budget.

You could just use a user field that displays in their profile.
