I’m exploring how Discourse could be used to build a community around BYDFi, especially for discussions about crypto markets, platform questions, beginner guides, and general user conversations.
One thing I’m not sure about is how many categories are actually useful before things start feeling cluttered.
Would it make more sense to keep just a few broad categories like Market Discussion, Help, and General, then use tags for topics such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, trading, and platform features?
I’d be interested to hear how other Discourse community managers approach this, especially for finance or other fast-moving topics.
Start with as little as possible, and add more as you find the need for them. Over-categorizing too early on a new site is a common mistake… it spreads out early activity, can make spaces feel emptier than they are, and gives new members too many choices.
This seems like a reasonable approach, tagging will also make it easier to find and move topics if it makes sense to create a separate category for these subjects in the future.
