“Block” a ‘Leader’

New here (but not to other forums hosted by Discourse).

I seem to remember ‘block’ being a function on one forum but one I am looking at the moment only has ‘mute’. But I can still see their posts. Bit of a catch 22 as I think you need TL3 to get block function (why I don’t know as it’s a really useful feature) but I don’t want to participate in the forum while I can still see this persons posts! Worse: they’re a ‘Leader’! It’s no wonder this particular forum has gone v quiet lately!

Is there any way of activating the block feature as soon as you sign up? Or is it even possible to block a ‘Leader’ (even at TL3)? To confirm, they’re not a mod thankfully!

Thanks

Welcome to Meta :waving_hand:

By default, users with TL2 and up can ignore other users. Admins can change that in the site settings. The setting is called Ignore allowed groups.

It’s possible to ignore users with TL4 (leader). So if you like the community apart from that person, you could try to reach TL2 to ignore them. By default, the requirements for TL2 don’t ask for too much active participation.

Have you tried to contact a staff member regarding the user? Even if they don’t think it’s necessary to intervene, they could perhaps activate the ignore function for you.

Thanks @Moin

I have the ignore feature but that doesn’t stop them! I’m not sure what use the ignore function is tbh. It needs a block function but I can’t get to that!

No point. The person is a ‘Leader’ for a reason and supported by the mods. It’s a really unfriendly forum and I can’t stand seeing their posts or replies off the back of mine.

I’ll have to leave that forum for now and hope they move on in time although unlikely.

Thanks though

[EDIT]: Just checked and looks like I’ve got “Muted” not “Ignore”. Sorry. Also I don’t know what TL I am on there it’s not clear. I thought I was TL3. I guess it’s possible I am TL2

I don’t think Discourse offers anything more than “ignore” where the posts are hidden from your view by default.

Surely this shows on your user profile summary?

It might be called something different, like member or regular.

I empathize with the fact that this sounds like a very awkward situation.

Is there nobody there you can reach out to with your concerns?

Ok thanks. Actually “ignore” would work (I think). It would be better than mute as I have them on mute but still see all their posts and replies and they give me anxiety.

Oh yes just checked that. It says Basic now. It said Member before. I’m sure at one stage it said Regular but they must’ve demoted me. There’s a lot of herd mentality on there and I came away from it for months because of the really impolite and unfriendly atmosphere.

Sadly not. The mods even like their posts and vice versa. It’s an echo chamber even on things like feature requests you can’t say something in reply or give an opinion as it’s only this person who has valid opinions and allowed to speak to people like dirt on their shoe.

It’s ok nothing can be done about it but strange as it’s not exactly a small organisation and relies on donations. I stopped donating a while ago as I couldn’t even make feature suggestions without being made to feel bad. Voting on your feet might make them realise eventually. It’s not a discourse forum issue I think it’s the specific forum although having the right tools to block or at least ignore would be a good start from the outset
