The discussion addresses an unexpected change in how category calendars are displayed after updating to Discourse 2026.10.0. Tonja reported that while only a parent category was configured in the “events calendar categories” setting, its calendar began appearing in every subcategory after the update. Previously, calendars only appeared in explicitly configured categories, with parent categories aggregating events from their subcategories without displaying individual calendars in those subcategories. Tonja sought clarification on whether this inheritance behavior was intentional and if a setting existed to disable calendars in unconfigured subcategories.
awesomerobot confirmed that this is now intended behavior and that there is currently no native setting to revert it. As a workaround, awesomerobot provided a CSS snippet that can be added to a theme component to hide the calendar element (#category-events-calendar) within subcategories and tags of a specific parent category. The provided code uses the parent category slug (e.g., events) to target the appropriate body classes, ensuring the calendar is hidden in the desired locations.
Tonja expressed appreciation for the quick response and the CSS fix but emphasized that the change is causing confusion and inconvenience for multiple internal teams who had built their category structures based on the previous behavior. Tonja requested that this feedback be shared internally for potential future adjustments, noting surprise that more users were not reporting the issue given its impact on existing setups.
After updating to Discourse 2026.10.0, the events calendar of a parent category is now also displayed on every one of its subcategories (there are many). Before the update, the calendar only appeared on the parent category and showed the events of the subcategories as well.
Our setup and expected behavior
Only the parent category is listed in Admins “events calendar categories”
The subcategories are not listed in “events calendar categories” nor are they “calendar categories”
Calendar in parent categorty aggregates the events of its subcategories.
Actual behavior
Each subcategory page now shows its own calendar as well.
Questions
Is this inheritance intended behavior since last update?
Is there a setting to turn calendar in subcategories off, so that only categories listed in “events calendar categories” show a calendar?
This was an intended change, and there’s currently no setting to disable it. I’ll share this feedback internally, but for now you can add some CSS to a theme component that will hide it from subcategories.
If your parent category is /c/events for example, you could do…
thank you so much for your quick answer and your idea for a quick fix.
I would really appreciate it if you could discuss this internally and maybe come up with a solution for such cases like ours.
I’m surprised that not more people are dealing with the same issue, as we we now have several teams in our company that have built their categories on the previous calendar principle. For them, it’s now kind of annoying and confusing.
