Can’t access Vultr DNS: abandapart is having trouble accessing their Discourse forum by typing the hostname “discourse.cinefilons.com” in the address bar, and can only access it by IP address.
ColdSun pointed out that the issue is likely due to the domain name “cinefilons.com” not being registered. abandapart created the domain after installing Discourse, but ColdSun clarified that the domain needs to be registered at a registrar.
ColdSun explained that Vultr is a server provider, not a registrar, and provided examples of registrars like domains.google.com and godaddy.com. abandapart considered registering a “.be” domain instead of “.com”, but ColdSun stated that there’s no real difference between the two.
Finally, zogstrip recommended using European registrars like OVH or Gandi, which offer better prices for Europeans.
I’ve chosen Vultr to host a server on which i’ve installed Discourse.
The problem is : i can’t access my forum by typing “discourse.cinefilons.com” (HOSTNAME) in the address bar. The only way i can access my forum is by typing the IP address of the server.
I know i failed somewhere but i don’t know where, i’m kind of a noobie… could anyone help me please ? Thanks!
PS : sorry if my english is bad, i usually speak french.
Did you remember to create a dns entry for your subdomain and point it to the server?
Apparently cinefilons.com isn’t a registered domain name. You’ll need to register it. Go to your registrar (if they’ll be managing your DNS) and direct the IP to your server.
I live in Belgium. Most of the members of my forum will come from France or Belgium. So it’s more logical for me to take “domain.be” than a “domain.com” right ? I mean what’s the difference between the two of them ?
