Choosing the default composer mode for your community

AI-generated summary

Discourse has introduced a new rich text composer that offers a “what you see is what you get” experience, making writing more approachable for users without Markdown experience. This feature is now available in all communities via a toggle that allows members to switch between the new rich text mode and the classic Markdown mode. Administrators can configure a default composition mode setting to determine which mode is shown by default for new members; rich text is the default for most communities, but this can be adjusted. Importantly, members always retain access to both modes, and Discourse saves their last used mode as an individual preference. In the comments, nickdb notes that some users prefer an in-place editing experience where the post itself serves as the composer, rather than using a popout modal.

We’ve also introduced a new default composition mode setting that admins can use to set the default mode of their community’s composer for new members. For new communities and most existing communities, rich text will be the default mode — but you’re welcome to change this as needed to suit your community’s needs.

Regardless of the default setting, members will always have access to both rich text and Markdown modes, and Discourse will save the last mode used by a member as their individual preference.

Some members don’t like the idea of a popout composer modal. They really want to just have the post itself be the composer so they edit in place.
