ZDNet is touting this as new, but the majority of the discussion began at the 2018 Chrome Summit. Might there be an advantage to using <portal> to embed discussions and ‘seamlessly’ transition users between content and discussion?
It’s already in Chrome 76, has anyone experimented with this yet?

That is not what I asked.
We will not be adding support for portals anywhere until other browser vendors start implementing it.
The idea according to the spec is to enable seamless navigation to oneboxed content.
I would say this is multiple years out before we even consider adopting this for specific oneboxes, it is a chrome experiment for now.
