Hi everyone,
Based on this amazing post, I decided to create my own beginner’s guide in Spanish for my community. It’s similar to the OP, but I’ve changed some parts and also expanded it with extra info about personal preferences, how to perform a search, and more…
Hope this is helpful for anyone; it’s the least I can do after all the help I’ve received around here ![]()
BTW: Please feel free to use this if your community is in Spanish (just make sure you complement it with your own pictures—I used the ones from the OP. I didn’t attach mine for privacy reasons
)
Discourse New User Guide
In this guide, we have compiled the basic information needed to navigate Discourse.
Basic Terms and Nomenclature
- Topic: The collection of messages grouped into a conversation with a title, listed under a category, starting with an Original Post and including all replies in chronological order.
- Post or Publication: Each element of a topic is a post or publication. Each post has its own author and can be moved to another topic or even become a new topic.
- Original Post: This is the first post of a topic and is key because it determines the focus of the topic, as well as its title and tags.
- Category: The primary means for organizing topics. Each topic is placed in a category. Categories have permissions that can restrict which users can create, reply to, and view their topics. It is also possible to configure notification preferences by category or even mute them, as explained below.
- Tag: A marker placed on a topic to describe it. While a topic can only have one category, it can have multiple tags, which is very useful for filtering content.
Navigating the Community
Topic List
By default, the home page will display all Recent conversations in the community, but you can filter this view in several ways:
- By Category: Click the “All Categories” box, and a list of all categories will appear.
- By Tag: Click the “All Tags” box, and a list of all tags will appear.
- By Activity Level: If you click “Popular”, topics will be displayed in order from highest to lowest activity (views and replies) over a specific period. You can select a specific period using the arrow that appears next to “Always”.
- By What’s New for You: New topics created in the last 2 days that you haven’t opened yet are shown with a small blue dot next to the topic title.
- By Unread Topics: By default, unread topics are those you have opened and read previously for at least 4 minutes that have new posts (replies) submitted. Unread topics show a number in a blue circle indicating how many new posts are in the topic.
Seeing Who Participates
There are several ways to see who is involved in topics.
On the home page, you will see a selection of avatars (profile pictures) of:
- The user who started the topic (always the first photo);
- A selection of the most active participants;
- And who created the most recent post (usually the last photo).
In some cases, the first photo has a blue border or a blue halo to indicate that the person who posted the original post is also the one who posted most recently.
The box at the bottom of the original post indicates who created the post and when, the count of replies and views in this topic to date, and the avatars of the most frequent participants.
Top Bar
To perform searches, open the menu, view notifications, or go to your user menu, use the icons in the top right.
Performing a Search
To perform a search, click the magnifying glass and enter words related to your search.
Additionally, if you are in a specific category, the search engine will show results within that category first, followed by other results.
But if you prefer to refine your search further, you can click the “Open Advanced Search” icon.

There, you can search for topics, categories, or users and filter by:
- Category
- Tag
- Your “Likes”
- Author
- Post Date
- Topic Status (closed, open, archived, …)
Remember that you can also search for content using the topics menu (specifying category and/or tags):
Menu
In the menu, you will find shortcuts to access:
- Recent, New, Unread, and Popular topics
- Badges page (you will see the ones you have earned marked with a
) - Groups page
- Users page
- Tags page
- Featured Categories
User Menu
Clicking your profile photo will open your user menu, which consists of 4 tabs:
- Notifications

- Saved Content

- Private Messages

- User Preferences

It is in the Preferences option
where you can adjust your account, customize your profile, and modify notifications.
Reading Content
A healthy community needs members who publish new content, but this activity is not everything. Readers are the true indicators of how healthy the community is.
Infinite Scroll
Scroll to navigate a topic or use the timeline scrollbar on the right. On smaller screens, select the bottom progress bar to expand it.
Content Updates
-
Select a topic title to go to your last read post.
-
Topics above the red line are new or updated since your last visit.
- If you have read to the end of a topic, the title will appear in light gray instead of black.
Related Topics
Sometimes conversations are clearer if topics are split, if posts are moved to a more appropriate topic, or if two related topics are merged. If a post is moved, a link will appear allowing readers to jump to that comment, and the person who posted it will also be notified.
A list of Related Topics will also appear at the end of the original post of a topic.
Creating and Participating in Content
Creating a New Topic
Both on the community home page and within any category, you will find the “+ New Topic” button.
![]()
This button will open the editor panel at the bottom of your browser. This editor allows you to see the final result of your post on the right side.
Replying
Press any Reply button to open the editor panel at the bottom of your browser. You can continue reading (and even search or navigate to different topics) while drafting your reply.
To reply to a specific post within a topic, click the gray Reply button at the end of the post, and your reply will be linked to it.
If your reply is the next one posted after the post you are replying to, it will appear below in chronological order.
If your reply is NOT the next one, then two things happen:
-
Your post will include a new link in its header to show that it is a “reply”. Clicking that link displays the previous post as context alongside the reply.
-
The original post will include a reply count at the bottom. Clicking this link allows you to view all replies.
Drafts
Drafts are saved automatically as you type. If you minimize the editor or navigate to a different topic, the editor might disappear. To open a draft, return to the topic you were replying to.
Quoting
To insert a quote, select the text you wish to quote and click the Quote button that appears. It is not necessary to quote a full message; being more specific helps.
Mentioning
To notify someone about your reply, mention their name. Type “@” to select a username.
Emoji
To use Emoji, press the emoji button in the editor or simply type : to match by name. You can also insert traditional emoticons ![]()
You can click “more” to see a full list of emojis and select the one you want.
Onebox (Link Preview)
To generate a summary of a link, paste it on a single line.
To start a topic with a link, paste the link in the title field.
Text Formatting
You can use the top formatting bar to make text bold, italic, create links, quotes, and insert images. Additionally, your reply can be formatted using simple HTML, BBCode, or [Markdown] (Markdown Reference).
If you want more formatting tips, check out this 10-minute tutorial.
Actions and Reactions
There are action buttons at the bottom of each post:
- To let someone know you appreciate their post, use the Like button. Spread the love!
- Get a link to any reply or topic via the Link button.
- Use the … button to reveal more actions:
– Flag to privately report an issue to the author or site staff.
– Edit to edit your post, if possible.
– Bookmark to find this post later on your profile page.
Notifications
When someone talks directly to you, replying to you, quoting your post, mentioning your @username, or even linking your post, a blue number will immediately appear over your profile photo at the top.
If the number is green, it means you have received a private message.
Click your profile image to browse all your notifications:
Optionally, you can receive these notifications as push notifications on your desktop browser or mobile device. Simply allow the site to send you notifications through your browser when it requests permission.
In any case, don’t worry about missing a reply: you will receive any notification that arrives while you are away via email.
If you wish, you can also receive notifications about other things happening in the community, either at the category or topic level.
Topic Notifications
You can change your notification level for any individual topic via the notification control at the bottom of each topic:
or at the end of the timeline on the right side of the topic, if the topic is long:
Category Notifications
The notification level can also be set by category. To change any of these default values, go to your user preferences or visit the category page and use the notification control you will see above the topic list, on the right side:
Tag Notifications
The notification level can even be set by tag. To change any of these default values, go to your User Preferences > Notifications > Tags:
