Taste-OF-IT is experiencing issues with backing up and restoring their Discourse CE Docker container. They used docker image save to create a backup and docker image load to restore, but the restored container still had the upgraded version instead of the old one. pfaffman suggested that the issue might be due to the database being in persistent storage and having been migrated past what the old image can support.
Taste-OF-IT mentioned that they upgraded using the Web UI, which worked without errors. pfaffman asked if the backup was restored to a different container, and Taste-OF-IT replied that they used the same container.
supermathie pointed out that the persistent data is stored on the filesystem, not in the container, and asked what task Taste-OF-IT was trying to accomplish. Taste-OF-IT explained that they wanted to backup the whole Docker container at night and be able to revert to the old container in case of an error during an upgrade.
pfaffman suggested that reverting the database would also be necessary and recommended using a staging site to test upgrades before running them on the production site.
Hi, i have Discourse CE run in Docker. I have root rights and i backup the container with docker id stop and docker image save -o file.tar. After that i upgrade discourse successfull. Now i tested the restore with docker image load -i file.tar and docker start id, but its still the upgrade version and not the old one as i aspekted.
What did i wrong?
The idea was simple to backup the whole docker container at night. Also like in this case bevor the upgrade from beta4 to beta5 and in case of an error, revert to the old container.
thx
You might want a staging site to test the upgrade before you run it. You could also push the container from the staging site to a repo and then launch that on the production site.
