אל להודיע לי על הפעולות שלי בעצמי, בבקשה

Here’s the scenario:

  • A user creates two threads for the same topic in quick succession.
  • I respond to the first one
  • I notice the second one
  • I move the second one into the first one (I know there are other things I can do with it. That’s a different topic. )

I get a thread update notification “from” the user because “they” updated the thread I responded to.

This is a minor point, but it would be nice if that notification were suppressed.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that we had a… “troubled” product release. On the community management side, we’ve been consolidating new error reports into existing threads about the same problems to keep the folks on the product side sane.

In the meantime, I’ve found that each time I move a new thread into an existing one, I get notified for the update (that I made) to the existing thread. At first it was a minor, barely noticeable irritation. But slowly…

Just dropping a note to say that this is still happening…

Slowly going crazy with this…

Also, this topic can be merged in here, I suppose

Ok, let me repro your scenario in the process of merging that other topic in.

Edit: So based on the description of the issue, I would have expected to get a notification after merging the other topic into this one, but I didn’t.
In that case, I’m not sure I understand the problematic scenario.

What notification status does the topic you replied to have after you replied? Do you automatically watch topics you reply to?

I wonder if you are notified about new posts in the topic you replied to because you are watching it.

This.

I’ve replied to TopicA
So I notice when TopicB is the same thing
So I merge B into A
And get an update notification on TopicA from AuthorB

@chapoi you should have replied before you merged

I think the default for “when posting” in the preferences is “tracking.” If yours is “watching,” then replying won’t have the same effect for others who perform the same steps.

Are you also notified about the new replies when you change the notification status of the topic manually with the button at the bottom or on the timeline instead of replying and merging a post into the topic?

Sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re asking. If, instead of merging, I turn off ‘watching’ do I still get notifications?

I need to know when users come back to me. That’s why I ‘watch’ topics I reply to.

I was interested if it’s the reply or the fact that you are watching the topic which is responsible for the notification. That’s why I asked if you are also notified if you change the topic tracking status to watching but do not reply.

I think I was able to reproduce this without the reply. My steps to reproduce were:

  1. Create 2 topics as a test user (Topic A & Topic B)
  2. As the admin/moderator, visit topic A and change the topic tracking status to “watching”
  3. Visit topic B, select the post, and merge it into topic A

I did. I replied in this topic with

Then merged the other one.

But I don’t set my topics to watching, only tracking so as Moin pointed out, that won’t get me the same notification.

So yes, as the current setup it makes sense you get that notification, but I agree it would be a nice-to-have to be a bit smarter about this. Not sure if this is an easy request, but I just wanted to clarify it.

I’ll dig around to see if we’ve gotten that feedback multiple times; it’s always easier to sell work internally if it’s a request by more than 1 person.

There a quite a few notifications like this that happen when the moderator user is watching something that they moderate.

It is quite irritating, but as it only affects active mods (i.e. usually me) I figured that it doesn’t pain regular users - and it wasn’t worth complaining about.

It would be very nice polish to have this not occur!!

The more votes this get, the better, so add yours if you can

And it might prove tricky to fix and as you said, not affecting the bulk of users so hard to give it priority (despite it being annoying). We’ll see.

I genuinely can’t get this repro – no idea what I’m doing wrong.

Happy to send a screen recording showing how I reproduce it, if useful.
