Same here for mp4/av1 videos on iOS (Safari and Firefox) but videos in webm/vp9 format do work. I can replicate this issue on my MacBook with Safari but everything works there in Firefox suggesting a problem with Webkit browsers.
Same here. The others work
Looks like the forum I’m using is on Discourse v3.6.0.beta3-latest.
AV1 on Safari only works on iPhone 15 Pro and newer per AV1 video format | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc
I’m on an iPhone 15 pro max
Thanks for replying but that’s not the explanation for this.
You are referring to hardware decoding support for av1. Safari supports software decoding for av1 and should not have a problem on any Apple device running recent versions of Safari.
If your answer was correct then the av1 videos should play in Safari on my MacBook Pro which has an M3 Pro CPU with hardware decoding support, but the problem exists there too.
To further confirm that software decoding of AV1 works fine on older iDevices I checked that the same AV1 videos can be watched via VLC on my iPhone 13 and iPad Pro with an M1 CPU.
I’m certain this is a new issue so either recent changes to Safari or Discourse are behind it. I’ll keep digging and see if it’s been reported elsewhere for anything else.
Could you please re-list the thread thanks.
AV1 video format | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc says it is only supported on devices with hardware decoding. Do you have any sources saying otherwise?
Well, Apple are not the most helpful here documenting things but anecdotally 4k HDR Youtube videos that claim to be av1 encoded play via Safari on my iPhone 13 and M1 iPad Pro which definitely do not have hardware encoding, but then again YT might be doing stuff behind the scenes or the creator isn’t being truthful about the encoding…
…Anyhow, this thread/bug report is about the OP not being able to play av1 encoded videos posted into a discourse forum on their iPhone 15 which has hardware decoding and which I have also replicated in Safari on a MacBook M3 Pro which also has hardware decoding. So let’s focus on that and please re-list as the OP requested.
Can you share a link to a video that has trouble playing on Discourse while using Safari?

here
This video is HEVC video in the MP4 container. Support is spotty across the web as it is a proprietary format HEVC/H.265 video format | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc
The OP is just H.264 in MP4, which is widely supported MPEG-4/H.264 video format | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc
The first reply has a video that is AV1 in MP4, which is not supported in Safari on devices without hardware decoders, per AV1 video format | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc.
This is not a Discourse bug, as Discourse doesn’t do any video transcoding, only serving video the same way it was uploaded.
One of our teams is working on adding transcoding capabilities to Discourse, but that will need a somewhat expensive AWS integration
