Exploring interest in a remote guest talk about Discourse for university students

Hi everyone,

I’m a second-year Physics undergraduate at the University of Nottingham, and I’ve recently started running a small Discourse instance for my cohort as an experiment in using Discourse for academic coordination - things like lecture events, timetables, resources, and discussion around modules.

It’s still very much early-stage and currently used more for coordination and information than high-volume discussion, but it’s been a really interesting way to explore how Discourse fits into a higher-education context from a student point of view.

I was wondering whether anyone from the Discourse team (or wider community) might be open to the idea of giving a remote guest talk for students - something informal, perhaps 30-45 minutes with Q&A - about topics such as:

  • how Discourse is designed and evolved
  • building and sustaining online communities
  • moderation, trust systems, and governance
  • real-world use cases (especially in education)

This would most likely be a fully remote session, so there’d be no expectation of travel or anything formal. I’m not speaking on behalf of the university - this would be a student-led, informal online talk, and I’d simply help organise and advertise it to interested students (and staff who may wish to attend).

At this stage I’m just exploring whether there’s any interest at all, rather than proposing anything concrete. If the answer is “not right now,” that’s completely fine - I mainly wanted to ask before going any further.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and thanks also for everything that goes into building and maintaining Discourse - it’s been a really valuable platform to learn from.

Best wishes,

Ethan
