Failed to create swap: are you root?

User Zinfas is trying to install Discourse on a Ubuntu 18.04, 64bit VPS from Hostinger, but is encountering an error. Falco asks about the Hostinger plan, to which Zinfas replies that they are on plan 2, which meets the requirements outlined in the Discourse installation guide.

Falco suspects that the issue is due to Hostinger’s use of LVE containers, which are not compatible with Discourse. They recommend contacting Hostinger’s support to inquire about their virtualization technology and suggest using DigitalOcean instead, as recommended in the official guide.

However, Zinfas had a negative experience with DigitalOcean, having their account locked immediately after payment. Falco sympathizes and recommends Vultr as an alternative, which Zinfas plans to investigate.

I bought a Ubuntu 18.04, 64bit VPS from Hostinger and I’m trying to install discourse but keep getting this error:

What Hostinger plan are you on?

I’m currently on plan 2, this is what best fit the requirements per instruction here: discourse/docs/INSTALL-cloud.md at main · discourse/discourse · GitHub

Is this their VPS offer from VPS Hosting | Powerful KVM-based Virtual Private Server ?

This error, like the error message says, means that this isn’t a real hardware and neither a full virtualization.

I checked Hostinger page, and for their “cloud hosting” product they use LVE containers which won’t work out of the box. Unfortunately their VPS page has no information about the virtualization technology they use, so I suggest you to contact their support and ask about it.

If you want a provider that is know to work we recommend DigitalOcean as said in the official guide.

I couldn’t get DigitalOcean to work sadly, I prepaid with 25$ and they locked my account immediately after.

Oh sorry to hear that. I had that happen to me in some providers…

The vultr that costs $5 from https://www.vultr.com/products/cloud-compute/ also work.

Thank you, I will have a look
