Google recently introduced new structured data support for discussion forums and profile pages to enhance SEO and improve how forum content appears in Search results. Users on Discourse are advocating for native support of these schemas, noting that while Discourse has used some structured data for years, current implementations fail Google’s validation checks—missing fields like text, datePublished, author, and url for DiscussionForumPosting and Comment types. dfabulich shared a Google Search Console report highlighting these issues, and rrit provided specific code-level fixes, such as adding itemprop="text", ensuring mainEntityOfPage is only set on the first post, and correctly linking url to the canonical topic page (not paginated subpages). Falco noted that Discourse v3.1.0 added distinct markup for posts and comments, but gaps remain. techAPJ redirected the conversation to a dedicated thread for resolving structured data issues holistically. Community members like Soenneker and abrambailey expressed strong interest in prioritizing this for SEO optimization. The Discourse team can reproduce the issue using meta.discourse.org’s Search Console data.
New in structured data: discussion forum and profile page markup
Monday, November 27, 2023
Today we’re announcing support for profile page and discussion forum structured data for use in Google Search, including new reports in Search Console. This markup works with Google Search features that are designed to show first-person perspectives from social media platforms, forums, and other communities. Implementing this structured data will help ensure what Search shows in these features is as accurate and complete as possible.
It would be great if Discourse were to add support for these. (They support JSON-LD and microdata.)
url: The canonical URL of the discussion. In multi-page threads, set this property to th first page URL. For a single discussion, this is usually the current URL.
Thanks all. I’m hoping this gets some attention at the start of the new year here. Very interested in optimizing everything as possible for Google SEO; let me know if I can help.
