The registered users only mode is good but thinking of going a different route.
Allow guests to view the list of topics and if they choose to read the full entry, they click and get a prompt to sign up.
Is this something hard to do?

Has been requested a few times (try searching) but not something we have any enthusiasm for, as we think this kind of bait-and-switch is unhealthy for the Internet and users.
Private sites, are of course supported..
You can do this already by setting the security permissions on all categories so that “everyone” has no privileges, but Trust Level 0 has all privileges.
Note that all the content will be invisible to search engines though…
