Hide anonymous users in the user directory

AI-generated summary

The discussion is about hiding anonymous users in the user directory. bdhays noticed that anonymous users, including timed-out accounts, are listed in the user directory, potentially making it harder to browse. However, tobiaseigen has implemented a change, as seen in the Discourse GitHub pull request, where anonymous users are no longer included in the user directory and do not show up in the user tally on the directory or about page.

I’m testing a self-hosted instance of Discourse with “allow anonymous posting” enabled. I’ve gone into Anonymous Mode a few times with a couple of different test accounts, so there are now four anonymous users (anonymous, anonymous1, etc).

I’m noticing that when I go to the user directory (Hamburger menu → Users), all of the anonymous users are listed along with the regular accounts. Even the anonymous accounts that have “timed out” so that their original owners can no longer access them are showing up.

Is there any way to hide the anonymous users in the user directory? I can see where, especially if I set “anonymous account duration minutes” to a lower value, I could end up with a lot of anonymous user accounts hanging around, which could make the directory harder to browse.

Better late than never! We are now no longer including anonymous users in the user directory. They also do not show up in the tally of users on the directory or about page.
