Our Horizon theme is not meant to be compatible with the topic-list-thumbnail component. Both alter the structure of the topic cards in very different ways, and therefor don’t play well together.
Here you can find a list with the current status regarding compatibility with other components:
…and in a new community (we’re still building this out) related to Peonies (the flowering plants) we were imaging a gallery using Grid view full of images…
That’s the point: it isnt listed, so it isnt supported.
It’s an official component, meaning we ensure it works with our basic theme (foundation), but it will not be supported any time soon on Horizon, which is our opinionated theme.
I’ve moved this to Feature – we don’t consider it a bug since it’s not currently a supported component, but I think it’s fine to continue discussing the request here.
We have been discussing the general pattern of using categories for different use cases more recently, and I see this request potentially fitting into that overall story in some way.
Can you share a bit more about each of the use cases for the categories that use this feature?
Categories where the visual aspect of topics is paramount; where an image from the first-post of a topic is at least as important as the text and so deserves to be seen as a thumbnail in topic listings. Cases where a tiled layout of large (single column, image full width on mobile; 3 or so per row on desktop) images is more important than diving into the specific topics. Podcasters engage with others’ show cover art, gardeners engage with images of plants, etc.
Meanwhile, I’ll have to go back to the Default Theme on my communities as Horizon (which is vastly better than Default in other ways) is a non-starter without the component. That component is a core feature of my communities.
I’d love to hear more of the details about your particular use cases, e.g. the two you mentioned here:
Can you describe the purpose of the category where people share their cover art a bit more?
How many categories total are there in each of these communities? Out of those categories, which ones use this layout and which ones don’t?
If others express a desire for this feature, I’m interested in capturing those stories as well.
Hearing real world, concrete examples of how people are using the current feature will help us better understand the richer context about what your needs are here.
For example, in these categories, do you require people to include an image in their first post? If so, you have adequate means to enforce that?
I did see that post, thanks. I appreciate you sharing the direct link to your forum along with the screenshot there. I can do some exploration on my own for starters.
I’m poking around on your site a bit and think I have a better understanding of things. Let me share and see if I’ve got it right.
You’ve got 5 main categories, and while all show an image thumbnail, the only category that uses the grid layout is the Introductions category
As a community of podcasters, it was natural to establish a norm that people include an image that shows off their podcast as part of their introduction topic, and they benefit from doing so because they can communicate “a thousand words” about what their podcast is about on the topic list itself that way.
Have you had to do anything else to encourage people to include an image as part of their intro post? Or is it sufficient for everyone just to see that “everybody else is doing it”?
Usage in Introductions tapered off, as the community engagement has faded. I’m in the middle of a rebranding of the community to shift it into the Podtalk brand ( https://podtalk.show ) which is a much better fit, making the existing show and the community be synergistic. (They are synergistic, but it’s not obvious to people.) As part of that, I’m refreshing the community new user onboarding… at least having an explicit “introduce yourself” lead in the Welcome topic, at most curating a dm sequence to suggest it. We shall see.
