How do we tag Ask AI topics?

Since Ask AI is built in as part of the Search feature, as I understand it, should topics about Ask AI be tagged with search + ask-ai or ai + ask-ai or search + ai + ask-ai ?

I understand it is related to the specific framing:

  • General AI question → ai : everything about LLMs, limits, proxies, quotas or whatever related to AI general topics.
  • Search related question → search : improving search results, integrating Typesense, how to change the default display search order, filtering and so on.
  • Specific to ask-ai → ask-ai : how to enable, disable, improve, customize Ask AI.

They can get combined, if the question is related to a specific ai model or feature and with a specific behavior into ask-ai :

I tried Deepseek R1 into Ask AI and it do not work as expected.

Or if the topic could be related to both search and ask-ai :

Does Ask AI replace completely the previous Discoveries while searching?

What I found a little over-lapping is the use of the three named tags on the same topic. The framing would usually have more weight to one or two of them but there could be exceptions as well.

Perhaps the team can mention their vision and correct mine, if they deem it appropriate. I respond from my common sense and with the hope that it will be useful for everyone.

I would use ai because that groups all the topics using a feature of the official AI plugin. It’s in the “official plugin” group.

And the plugin topic says that topics should be

I expected ask-ai to be in the “Discourse AI Features” group. It currently isn’t. But the group requires the ai tag to be added first, and I think that makes sense. Every topic that is about a feature of the AI plugin is also about the AI plugin.

I am not sure I would include search. To me, ask-ai and search are the two options in search, so if the topic was about something affecting both or the combination of them, I would add both. Otherwise, I would probably only use ask-ai.

ask-ai and ai would be good.

For now, search largely still refers to the postgres indexed search feature.

This is heavily tech-oriented forum, but if I would use tags to find some details about search, including ask ai, then my first choice would be search

If I have to start thinking what happens under the hood when searching meanings, it would be very difficult situation. One strong value of tags is possibility use several tags and that’s why should

use all of those (but it depends, as usual, the real meaning of a topic)

You don’t need to. You can simply decide by which mode you chose. If your topic is realted to the ai mode of search you use the ai tag, if it’s not about the ai mode it’s classic search.

Do you feel similar about tagging all ai-bot topics as personal-messages because that’s where you talk to the bot?

I don’t think we expect anyone to tag anything correctly. It’s totally cool not to know what to tag.

This topic is just a guidance topic. With AI and our tag suggester, this conversation can improve how we organise things here. All good.

Yes, if that topic includes, in some real meaning, bots too — actually… that was the original point of tags.

Of course we don’t. What weare actual expecting is finding all relevant topics when clicking a tag :man_shrugging: Thinking if behind a search is pqsl or ai kind of breaks that, when the point is search.

Let’s imagine I want to find very really basic things:

  • what a search will offer as hits
  • how to include ai services into searching in my forum

would all topics or just some have search too? Or should there be some logic as with search should be used ai-search too, depending of topic, because search is more general term, that includes ai-search too?

Or in general: what will break if a topic has every tags it covers?

Finding the topics you are looking for. More is not always more helpful. I think adding desktop mobile pwa and ios to almost every topic just because a feature works on all of them isn’t adding any value. The number of tags allowed on topics is limited for a reason. You don’t add as many as possible for as much attention as possible. You carefully choose them, so people that configured their notifications based on them aren’t spammed. An admin might be interested in search, but hasn’t enabled the ai plugin on their forum. While it of course can happen, the general approach should be not to spam them with stuff not relevant for them.
